The Sakyu chaise longue

This chaise longue, designed by Michael Geldmacher, has a noble silhouette that draws its exquisite proportions from the scenery he experienced while journeying through the Sahara Desert. Sakyu embodies the pursuit of minimalism aiming at accentuating the beauty of the seat material, called Igusa. Its versatile shape is enhanced by the choice between two different materials for the frame: steel or wood. The comfortable headrest, fixed with magnets, provides the most relaxing seating experience.

WHY IGUSA

Weaving Igusa (rush grass) into Tatami mats is an ancient Japanese craft. Like many artisan traditions it is threatened to be replaced by modern technologies or other materials: in Japan this Industry has decreased by 50% over the last ten years. Concerned about the decline of domestically produced Igusa, ADAL – one of Japan’s largest contract furniture manufacturers with a history spanning 70 years – started a furniture development using domestically produced Igusa in 2015. This initiative was unveiled at the 2019 Milano Design Week under the brand Look into Nature. Sakyu, as a part of this vision, is designed to display the beauty of this material and its unique patterns.

FROM THE DESIGNER

“There is so much that made me fall in love with Igusa and Look into Nature. First of all, the qualities of the material: it is humble without being showy, and sensual without being bright and shiny. It covers the floor with a certain softness and dampens noise and sounds. These aesthetic properties of Igusa have always fascinated me in traditional Japanese houses with tatami floors. Transforming this material into design pieces was such a stimulating challenge.”
