Episode 1
The Farmers
The first episode is about rush grass farmers. The igusa industry has been a part of Japan for over 1,300 years, but in the past 30 years, its scale has drastically shrunk, putting its future continuity at risk. We spoke with the Nakayama couple, who run Nakayama Farm in Yatsushiro, a farm that produces over 95% of Japan’s igusa.
Episode 2
The Craftsmen
The second episode focuses on the craftsmen. It highlights the hardships and joys of the weavers who create the beautiful igusa fabric known as hanagoza, the precision of the dyers who calculate the temperature and humidity to find the optimal mixture for each occasion, and the passion of the furniture craftsmen who finish the igusa furniture after these processes and send it off around the world. This is what our heritage is made of.
